over the hill Beginner Guide
Published · Updated
over the hill rewards patience, route planning and steady progress across wilderness routes. You start in quiet terrain with classic 4x4 vehicles inspired by the 1960s through the 1980s, then expand your range by discovering trails, portals, cabins and scenic landmarks. The game supports solo play and online co-op with up to three friends.
Start by learning the terrain
Emerald Lake is the introductory area in The Valhalla's Canada. It has relatively flat terrain, scenic valleys, water crossings, muddy boreal-forest trails and the primary Mechanic shop. Use this map to practice throttle control, low-range driving and careful water entries before moving into the steeper alpine sections of Gimli Ridge or Asgard Mountain.
The five release areas are each about 4 by 4 km. Portals and tunnels connect the areas, so opening a route is often more valuable than completing every optional marker in one trip.
Prepare for recovery
Difficult terrain can leave a vehicle stuck, tilted or unable to find traction. Recovery equipment is part of the game's toolkit: winches help recover the vehicle, while planks can help bridge difficult gaps. Carry useful tools rather than assuming every route can be forced at speed.
Cabins are especially useful checkpoints. A first visit pays 10 Pebbles, clears fog within 400 m, reveals some nearby places, fully repairs the vehicle and refills its tool slots. Reaching a new cabin can therefore turn a risky outing into a safer staging point.
Use trails and discoveries for progression
Challenge trails are dashed checkpoint routes. Community map data records 23 across the five release areas. The first finish pays 15 to 40 Pebbles and, on most trails, a new vehicle. If a route becomes too difficult, leave it open and return with a vehicle or equipment loadout that suits the terrain.
Crates, scenic points, item recovery jobs and meteorite spawn points also reward exploration. Rather than driving straight to one marker, look for a route that links cabins, trails and collectibles while keeping an escape path back to safer ground.
Photograph wildlife calmly
Wildlife photography adds another long-term goal. Use the in-game camera to document species and build the wildlife compendium. Animals vary by area, rarity and habitat, so plan for slow observation rather than a high-speed photo route. The first photo of each species provides Pebbles, and completing a region's compendium supports the Naturalist achievement.
For a first session, focus on learning how to move without damaging the vehicle, finding cabins, opening routes to neighboring areas and practicing recovery. Those basics make later trips easier than a rushed route to the next marker.
